The GP Select U19 captured a bronze medal at the Colonial Cup Lacrosse Tournament in Pittsburgh at Robert Morris University on June 20.
The team went 4-1 overall and was defeated in the semifinals by the Pittsburgh Rebels U19 “A” squad. The team was ranked third overall in a skilled U19 division which featured several elite travel teams.
After four convincing victories by a 41 -10 margin, GP Select fought hard put could not put away an excellent team comprised of players from Western PA’s five best High School programs.
“This year’s U19 team is stacked with talent and dominated this event.” said head coach and director Ken Brubaker. “Our team has 26 players and unfortunately only 15 could attend this event.”
“In the end fatigue and injuries won us over. I am very proud to have been a part of such a hard fighting bunch of guys who dug down deep every minute of every game.”
The Colonial Cup is a National College Recruiting event held annually in the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania at Robert Morris University. (D1) (NCAA). This year’s event featured 12 teams, representing PA, OH, WVA and NC.
Twenty-five DI, DII, & DIII college coaches were in attendance. Mercyhurst, , Manhattan College, Canisius, Hartwick , Robert Morris, Carnagie Melon, and Tri-State were represented at this year’s event. The coaches scout players, mix it up with the kids, and put on excellent skill and technique clinics in between games.
This is GP Select third season, with a majority of the players coming from Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North and University Liggett School. Other players attend UD Jesuit and De LaSalle HS.
GP Select features two teams, one in The U19 Division and one in the U17 Division. Home games are played at Grosse Point North HS. More information is available at 313lax.com.
The team will be traveling to Kalamazoo on June 28 & 29 to defend the U19 championship at the Great Lakes Lacrosse Invitational which they won in 2007. GP Select will also be competing July 17-20 at the Ohio State Team Camp and the Brine Team Challenge at Hobart University on August 1-3 in Geneva, NY.
